5 Things Every Colorado Driver Should Know About Auto Insurance

If you've driven in Colorado for any length of time, you already know — the roads here come with their own set of challenges. Between unpredictable weather, winding mountain passes, and the occasional wildlife crossing, having the right auto insurance isn't just a legal requirement. It's a necessity.
As a Farmers Insurance agent right here in Wheat Ridge, I talk to drivers every week who are surprised by gaps in their coverage. Here are five things I think every Colorado driver should keep in mind.
1. Colorado's Minimum Requirements Might Not Be Enough
Colorado law requires drivers to carry liability insurance with at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage. While that satisfies the legal requirement, it doesn't go very far in a serious accident.
Think about it this way — if you're involved in a collision and the other driver's medical bills exceed your coverage limit, you could be personally responsible for the difference. In a state where the average new car costs over $40,000 and a single ER visit can run into five figures, minimum coverage can leave you exposed.
I always recommend looking at higher liability limits and considering uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. It's usually more affordable than people expect, and it provides a real safety net.
2. Hail Season Is No Joke
Anyone who's lived through a Colorado spring knows that hailstorms can roll in fast and hit hard. We're talking golf ball-sized hail that can total a car's exterior in minutes. If you only carry liability insurance, hail damage comes straight out of your pocket.
Comprehensive coverage is what protects you from hail, falling branches, theft, vandalism, and other non-collision events. For most drivers in the Denver metro area, adding comprehensive coverage is well worth the cost — especially when you consider that Colorado consistently ranks among the top states for hail damage claims.
3. Uninsured Drivers Are More Common Than You Think
According to the Insurance Research Council, roughly one in six Colorado drivers doesn't carry insurance. That means every time you're on I-70 or cruising down Kipling Street, there's a real chance the driver next to you has no coverage at all.
Uninsured motorist coverage steps in when the other driver can't pay. It covers your medical expenses and, depending on your policy, vehicle repairs as well. It's one of those coverages that feels unnecessary — until the day it isn't.
4. Your Commute and Mileage Affect Your Rate
Where you live, where you work, and how far you drive each day all play a role in your premium. Drivers who commute through heavy traffic areas — like the stretch between Wheat Ridge and downtown Denver — tend to have higher rates because statistically, more time in traffic means a greater chance of being involved in an accident.
If your commute has changed recently — maybe you're working from home a few days a week or you've switched jobs — it's worth reviewing your policy. You might qualify for a lower rate based on reduced mileage. I've helped plenty of clients save money just by updating their driving habits on their policy.
5. Bundling Can Save You More Than You Expect
If you're carrying auto insurance with one company and home or renters insurance with another, you're probably paying more than you need to. Most carriers offer multi-policy discounts when you bundle auto with homeowners, renters, or even life insurance.
I've seen clients save anywhere from 10% to 25% just by bringing everything under one roof. Beyond the savings, it simplifies things — one agent, one bill, one phone call if you ever need to file a claim.
The Bottom Line
Auto insurance doesn't have to be complicated, but it does need to match your life. Colorado throws a lot at drivers — weather, wildlife, construction zones, and everything in between. Making sure you're properly covered is one of the smartest things you can do.
If you're not sure whether your current policy is keeping up with your needs, I'm happy to take a look. No pressure, no sales pitch — just an honest review of where you stand and what might make sense for you going forward.
